RECE Pro I SEP 91
Pall Mall, S.W.
London, S.W.,
War Office,
31st August 1891.
I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to
acquaint you that his attention has been drawn, in connection with a letter received from the General Officer Cormanding, Hong
Kong, to the fact that the Colony has not been given the option
of paying its contribution in this country in sterling.
Mr Stanhope considers that it would be desirable to
give the Colony, as in other cases,
He would such option.
therefore suggest that the Officer Administering the Government of Hong Kong be informed that the Contribution may be paid either in rupees into the Treasury Chest at Hong Kong, at the rate fixed by the Treasury for all chest, receipts or payments for the period in respect of which the payment is made, or in sterling in this country, according to the convenience of the Colony; but the Colony must choose, at the beginning of each year, one method of payment definitely, and not pay part of a year's contribution
in one way, and part in another.
The Under Secretary of State
for the Colonies.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Rapplethanpon
